Michael E. Melvin Bio 2021
I was born in Stuttgart, Germany where my appreciation for film started when I was 3 years old, my favorite pastimes were when my dad would show family movies filmed on an 8mm camera, and going to matinees and late-night movies at the local theater in Germany. It was in the early ’80s after moving to Texas at the age of 5, that I found a desire for filmmaking, as well as music. My fascination with Star Wars; The Empire Strikes Back, The Learning Tree, Cooley High, Uptown Saturday Night, Superman, and Popeye sparked my creativity and interest in storytelling, I expressed and sharpened my storytelling skills through art, music, and poetry, which all lead to and aided me at some point in filmmaking.
I had wanted a video camera for years, so my older brother, who supported my interests in studying filmmaking, gifted me an 8mm VHS camera when I left for college as a going-away present. So, began my journey into filmmaking, producing, shooting and editing short films while in my undergrad. I found inspiration through filmmakers such as; Spike Lee, Malcolm Lee, Tyler Perry, Gordon Parks, my mentors Mike L. Jackson and Christopher Nolen. Having always been fascinated with using storytelling to captivate an audience big or small, I was on my way.
It is a great privilege and honor to be able to pursue my passion for producing films while generationally impacting lives.
